Clinton is one of Mississippi’s larger cities but it still has the feel of a college town, with brick streets in Olde Towne, the Natchez Trace Parkway winding through and neighborhoods full of families who love being outdoors. Madison Planting & Design Group offers landscaping in Clinton, MS, designing and building patios, gardens and outdoor living spaces that make the most of a Clinton yard. Our design work is led by a licensed landscape architect, and our own crews build it.

A city with a sense of place
The Natchez Trace was the first road through Clinton, and today the Natchez Trace Parkway, US 80 and I-20 all pass through the city. Clinton is home to the oldest college in Mississippi, founded in 1826. Its Olde Towne district, with a street grid laid out in 1829 and brick streets, gives the city a historic heart. With about 28,000 residents, it’s the tenth-largest city in the state and has a mix of older homes near Olde Towne and newer subdivisions farther out.
Good landscaping takes its cues from that setting. Near Olde Towne, that might mean brick or natural stone walks, classic shrubs and a garden arbor. In newer neighborhoods, it might mean a backyard patio and outdoor fireplace with layered planting for privacy.

Solving common Clinton yard problems
Clinton yards share the challenges of the whole Jackson metro: heavy clay soil, more than 50 inches of rain in a typical year and long, humid summers. Common problems we can help solve include:
- Soggy spots and runoff: we grade beds and lawn so water moves away from the house. A rock creek bed can carry storm flow through the yard and double as a garden feature, and a French drain can dry out stubborn wet spots. See drainage solutions.
- Struggling shrubs: often the wrong plant for the spot, or planted in unimproved clay. We choose plants for the conditions and prepare beds properly.
- A backyard you don’t use: a well-placed stone patio, shade from a pergola or tree, and a little privacy planting can change that.
- Watering headaches: an irrigation system zoned for sun and shade takes the guesswork out of dry spells.

Choosing plants that last
Clinton is in USDA hardiness zone 8b, so a wide range of Southern favorites will thrive here when they’re planted in the right spot. We favor a sturdy framework of evergreen shrubs and long-lived trees, accented with flowering shrubs and seasonal color near entries and patios. Beds get properly prepared soil and a finish of pine straw. Whenever possible we plant trees and shrubs in fall, the best season for root growth in Mississippi according to MSU Extension.
