Warm-season lawns follow a clear rhythm in central Mississippi. In spring, grass greens up and weeds race to get ahead of it, so timing fertilization and weed control matters. Summer brings the fastest growth, the most mowing and the highest risk of drought stress and insects. In fall, growth slows and the lawn prepares for winter. Over winter, warm-season grasses go dormant and turn tan, which is normal. Winter weeds become easy to spot then. A good lawn program changes with each season instead of doing the same thing every visit.

- Mow high enough. Scalping warm-season grass stresses it, especially in summer heat.
- Water deeply, not daily. Deeper, less frequent watering encourages deeper roots. Early morning is best.
- Mind the clay. Our heavy clay soils drain slowly, so over-watering can cause shallow roots and fungus.
- Keep blades sharp. Clean cuts help grass recover faster and resist disease.
